Instructor: Nicole Traicoff
Ever wanted to be self-sufficient, learn how to sew your own clothing, accessories and household items?
Then Sewing School is for you! No sewing experience required!
We will start with the basics of sewing machines, how to sew straight lines, and how to iron/press seams. As we go, we will practice our skills in class, starting with simple projects like pillows, tote-bags and keychains. Challenge yourself as the year progresses to learn how to sew curves, add elastic, sew ruffles and gathered garments, and measure and make patterns for clothes. The projects will get more complex as we progress to sewing items with zippers, adding embellishments and decorations, and making our own outfits! This course will offer a block-style workshop format so you can drop in for the skills you want to focus on and skip sections you already know or don't want to focus on.
As we go, we will share our new-found talents with those in need, participating in a three different sewing service projects to make bibs, toys and a class quilt for pregnancy centers, sew dresses for girls in poorer nations, and cheer children in hospitals and foster care with colorful pillowcases and dress-up capes.
You will need: your own sewing machine, sewing scissors, straight pins with large heads, fabric pencil or marking chalk, fabric for different projects as needed.
Supplies provided by Quest/Instructor (but which you may need to have access to at home): cutting mat and rotary cutter, irons and ironing board, cutting rulers, project patterns, seam gauges, flexible rulers.
Estimated costs for this class (whole year):
(I try to keep this as affordable as possible, and you’re learning a skill you can use for the rest of your life!)
• Fabric: $40-90 – This number is variable because sometimes we will be reusing our scraps for additional projects, and there are always great fabric sales!
• Sewing Equipment: $15-25 for pins, Tailor’s chalk, and Scissors (if you have these already this cost is less)
• If you don’t have a sewing machine, this will be an extra cost. Beginner sewing machines can run from $90-250 but will last a lifetime!
